New books are on the shelf at the library while many older ones which haven't been read for years are moving on to the Friends of the Library Book Sale on February 11 from 10am - 2pm. If you have books to donate, take them to the stage at the Worthington Town Hall before Friday the 10th. Come in to see a great selection of fiction and non-fiction books, DVDs and CDs, too! Here are a couple of reviews for books in on our new shelf:

Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman

This is a fabulous, engrossing novel, described as five years in the writing, and worth every bit of the wait. It takes place in the Judean desert beginning in 70 B.C. and weaves together the stories of four women who take care of the dovecote at the fortress at Masada tell their stories. There is Yael, the daughter and sister of Sicarii, professional assassins, and Revka, who with her two mute grandsons has just witnessed the horrific murder of the boys' mother in the desert. Shirah and her warrior daughter Aziza. Shirah, a healer and a witch, worships the ancient goddess Ashtoreth while her daughter disguises herself as a boy in order to use her warrior skills, providing a contrast to her brother who shrinks from those same skills. The women's ability to survive, and just as importantly, to carve lives which fraught with danger also have deep meaning make this story hard to put down. For all who have had to face life with resilience, this book honors that and much more.

The library book club will be reading Dovekeepers and discussing it at our regular meeting on February 23 at 7:00pm. Join us - everyone is welcome.

This next book is new this week:

A Grown Up Kind of Pretty by Joshilyn Jackson

Jackson takes you on an interesting journey as she builds the story in A Grown Up Kind of Pretty. It is multi-generational, though Ginny, the oldest is only 45, and bases the narrative on the fact that every 15 years some kind of trouble up ends her life. One story line is about her daughter Liza, and her daughter Mosey, whose blood connection comes into question when a grave with an infant's skeleton is found in Ginny's back yard. Another is about Ginny's relationship in the past with the love of her life, who was married (but separated!) at the beginning of their relationship and is now divorced. A third story line is about Liza, and who fathered her child, and who now is recovering from a stroke. Each story line is well thought out, holds hidden information that gets revealed with excellent timing and weaves in with the other story lines pretty seamlessly. You get attached to the characters immediately and can't wait to see how everything works out.

Saturday, September 24 at 3:00pm, join us at the library with Frank Grindrod of EarthWork Programs who will teach the art and skill of trapping in his workshop Trapping: The Sacred Harvest. Bring a knife and be prepared to go outside to learn the intricacies of finding and following tracks in nature in order to build traps.

Wednesday, September 28 at 7:00pm, Brian Hawthorne of Fisheries and Wildlife will speak about Hunting and Fishing in Massachusetts. The season is approaching and now is time to learn about these skills.

Saturday September 17 at 4:00pm, join us at the Worthington Library to hear local author, Kathy Harrison speaking about her book JUST IN CASE. Most of us in the hilltowns have had to deal with power outages, ice storms and deep snow. This year we even had a tropical storm! Were you prepared for a week without power? Do you know where you would go or what to take if you had to leave? What about your pets? Kathy will talk about many of the things we might not have thought of. Don't miss this informative discussion, part of the year long series based on The Omnivore's Dilemma.

Authors to present "Veggie Tips" on Wednesday

At 7 pm on Wednesday September 7, the Worthington Library will be hosting authors Ron and Jennifer Kujawski. Their book, The Week by Week Vegetable Gardener's Handbook, inspires their talk and slide program, "Veggie Tips." They will discuss techniques to use to get an early start on the vegetable garden in spring and to extend the harvest in fall. They will also discuss soil enrichment via cover crops, space saving methods, and provide a few tips for food preservation.
Come in out of the rain and join us for this informative program!

New books deserve a look. See what our reviewer, Susan Arthen, has to say:

Hotwire by Alex Kava

This book is described as a thriller and is apparently the 9^th book by Kava featuring Maggie O'Dell as an FBI profiler. I haven't read any other of the novels featuring O'Dell but I plant to do so after reading this one. She is skillfully drawn as a talented, intelligent and resourceful character which is of course, requisite. However, just a skillfully revealed are her "ordinary" qualities- her anxiety about her life partner, the mistakes she realizes she has just made, her confusion while sorting out a bizarre case of electrocuted teens and so she is more readily perceived as a regular person. The mystery she is working on is interwoven with the case her FBI partner is working on, a deadly pathogen showing up in school lunches, and this leads to a USDA corruption scandal. Sound too predictable? I can guarantee there are enough well thought out twists and sub-plots in Hotwire to keep you interested!

Lot's Return to Sodom by Sandra Brennan

This book begins with Liv Bergen visiting her family in their hometown territory in the Black Hills of South Dakota while recuperating from the injuries she received in the 1st book of this series, "In the Belly of Jonah". During Liv's visit, her brother's girlfriend is murdered during the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which draws over 500,000 bikers to the Black Hills each summer. I liked that it is a stand alone book, and that I didn't feel as though I was missing something by not having read the first book. You are drawn into the story and that she ended up in the middle of this particular investigation is smoothly handled. Puzzling out who the killer was and in the end having the killer be both surprising and someone who was woven into the action all along makes this a great read for those who loves the suspense novels.

A Grown Up Kind of Pretty by Joshilyn Jackson

Destiny of the Republic by Candice Millard

This book works well for readers of history and readers of fiction as well. Taking the facts of the assassination attempt on President Garfield, Millard narrates a totally believable story about Garfield, elected president by acclamation, an office he attempted to avoid. It was clearly a loss to the nation, a bad case of what might have been had he lived, that rises up off the pages. What was even more horrific is that Garfield, shot by a deranged man within weeks of taking office, is basically killed by his own doctor. I was cringing every few pages as the story reveals his medical care from the moment he fell to the floor of the train station right up to his final moments because I knew how much was going wrong based on medical knowledge today. What is tragic is that the idea of germs, of keeping things sterile, and finding the exact location of the bullet within Garfield were all just newly known then but not accepted at all. And so a possibly great President died a painful and tragic death. Since I do not, as a rule, read non-fiction history books, the combination of fact and story was quite appealing and informative.

The Stranger You Seek by Amanda Kyle Williams

This is a terrific thriller with an extremely talented serial killer as the focus. Of course you immediately root for Keye Streete, the ex-FBI profiler who has been getting by on small investigative jobs after getting sober. As she gets closer to the killer, the killer seems to be making attempts to keep her out of the way of the investigation, which confuses things of Keye. A decent amount of solid red herring work, a twist near the end that works even though it seems to come out of no-where, a stupid ex-husband and a current but unacknowledged love interest provide a fully fledged book that intrigues right to the last page.

Edible Perennial Gardening and Landscaping is a comprehensive introduction to the variety of delicious vegetables, fruits, and nuts that can be grown in the Northeast, including both traditional and novel planting selections. This presentation includes basic gardening tips for establishing perennial herbs, vines, shrubs and trees that will yield abundant crops year after year throughout the growing season with minimal maintenance. Participants learn how to integrate the needs of plants, beneficial insects and soil organisms using organic gardening techniques. Everyone is offered samples of edible perennial fruits and nuts for tasting. Handouts with resources for further study and recommended sources of seeds and plants will be available.

New Books, Summer Reading and Mushrooms

First of all, there are a lot of new books to read at the library You will find a bit of everything from romance to science fiction on the new books shelf. Don't forget to look at the new CD shelf, too! Both young adults and kids will find some treasures featured on shelves in their areas - look for the "New" stickers and you'll have quite a treat.

This Thursday, August 18 at 10:30, we will host the Summer Reading Party with DJ, Into the Groove. This year our reading program, One World, Many Stories, has partnered with Heifer International. The more books read, the more money will be donated to provide an animal through Heifer's "Read to Feed" program. If you want to help them out, the kids have made a donation can which is on the circulation desk.

Last, but not least, coming up next Saturday, August 20 from 3 - 6pm is a workshop on Mushroom Log Inoculation. In this hands on workshop, we will be drilling oak logs and inoculating them with edible mushroom spore. Participants will be able to take home a log (as long as they last) and grow their own delicious mushrooms. Local mushroom enthusiast, Martin Bridge will be conducting this workshop.

Summer Reading starts this week

Join us on Thursdays this summer as we explore "One World, Many Stories" with Heifer International as our partner. This year's summer reading program gets off to a start on Thursday, July 14 at 10:30 am with storyteller, Eshu Bumpus.

Let's not leave out the adults! Novel Destinations is the theme as we embark on new horizons. This month's book club pick is The Beekeeper's Apprentice by Laurie King. Pick up a copy of this Holmesian mystery at the library. Our discussion is Thursday, July 28 at 7:00 pm.

New Book Shelf

Quite a number of new books have been cataloged recently. Many of them are children's books. There is a wonderful series on cooking from cuisines around the world, Cool World Cooking. Easy to follow pictures and simple recipes guide the young chef to success with a little help from adults. These are great confidence builders and they also tie in with our summer reading program, "One World, Many Stories" and the discussions we have been having about local food this year. Don't forget to take a look at the young persons' edition of the Omnivore's Dilemma.

Also written for juniors is a very informative series on weather. The series title is Science of the Skies and it has such titles as Tornadoes, Hurricanes, Clouds and Snow. The six books of this series have phenomenal photographs and clear, scientific explanations.

In junior fiction, my favorite is The Emerald Atlas, by John Stephens. At first, I thought this might be another of the children save their parents or the world books so popular after the Harry Potter series came to an end. While The Emerald Atlas begins in a similar fashion to the His Dark Materials series by Pullman, this first book in The Books of Beginning quickly shows a greater depth to its characters and much more challenging twists of fate for the children to navigate. I found myself thinking about the characters when I wasn't reading; only very compelling characters crawl into my head when I am not watching. I eagerly await the next book in the series. Make sure you put this one on your list, too.

On the adult shelf, look for Faith by Jennifer Haigh and Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda:

Faith by Jennifer Haigh

What could be more intriguing than a family drama where the much beloved son and brother, Art, a priest, is accused of molesting the son of his housekeeper. And in this case, he is innocent. With the news coverage still tracking molestation cases, and the outrage many of us feel about them, it is easy to forget that not all those accused are guilty. The characters all ring true; their strengths and foibles make you want to have everything work out in the end. It does, but not in any way that is predictable.

Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda

The stories of the adoption of children from other countries by parents from the United States is a popular topic these days, from totally fictional accounts to memoirs. The challenges of a couple from different cultures and countries has also been thoroughly explored. Secret Daughter wrestles with both of these situations in a deft and interesting way. In some ways, there is a degree of predictability- the couple in question sadly underestimated how undermining their family of origin traditions are to their relationship and neither of the pair seem to have a clue. Weave in the strand of raising their daughter, who is of the same nationality as her father, and it is obvious that her mother becomes the odd one out. However, there is a subtlety, almost a sneakiness, to the degree of denial all three main characters indulge in and as things unwind you find yourself talking to the characters aloud, wanting them to shape up. An important lesson that is being offered here is the cost of unconsciously living your life on autopilot and then making some choices to wake up.

Movie time

On Saturday April 2, we showed the movie, The World According to Monsanto. We had a good number of people attend and they got a special treat! We were able to show the movie on our new 72" screen, using a projector which runs from a computer. New speakers rounded out the set-up so we can proudly say we now have a proper movie theater setting. A set of comfortable new chairs add to the experience.

Our next movie is The Lion in Winter showing April 14 at 7:oopm. We hope to make our movie nights more attractive to more people by adjusting time of day and day of the week, so if you have a preference, please let us know at the library. Coming attractions will include some of the newest films available. Put your selection on our queue!

This is a movie which investigates the many questions surrounding genetically modified foods and seeds and their ubiquitous but unrecognized presence in our lives. If you have been attending the Library’s events related to Michael Pollan’s Omnivore’s Dilemma, you know how wonderful a performer she is!

On Sunday, March 27 at 2 PM, a video titled "KARIN AND BOB COOK: SURVIVING

INDEPENDENTLY IN A MODERN WORLD" will be shown publicly for the first time

at the Worthington Historical Society. This tribute to the Cooks is part of the WHS's

ongoing oral history project. It was created by Helen and Ed Pelletier of Berkshire Hills

Productions, and includes interviews by Kate Ewald and Pat Kennedy. The project was

funded, in part, through a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

The video is about an hour long, two parts, and focuses on the story of the Cooks' arrival

in Worthington in the early 1970s and their decision to live off the land as simply as

possible. They describe their maple syrup business, their wreath making and wood

harvesting ventures, raising their kids off the grid with almost no modern conveniences

(they powered their single lamp at night with a car battery) and Karin's life as an artist.

Join us during this weekend to celebrate local sustainability. We’ll see you there!

Snow or no, February is packed with exciting events you won't want to miss beginning with Movie Night at 7:00 pm on Thursday the 10th when we will watch Despicable Me.

The Friends of the Library's Midwinter BOOK SALE will be held on Saturday the 12th at the Town Hall from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Early birds may shop starting at 9:00am for a fee. If you have books to contribute, take them to the Town Hall Stage during the week. To volunteer to help set up or take down the book sale, call Laurie at 238-4229 or Susan at 238-0047.

The first discussion group for The Omnivore's Dilemma will be held on Wednesday the 16th at 7:00pm at the library. We will be discussing the first meal - an industrial agricultural model based on corn.

On February 26 at 4:00pm stop by the library to hear James Bowles, The Kitchen Gardener, speak about creating kitchen gardens and growing vegetables year round.

The Worthington Library will be closed for New Year's Day. We will resume regular hours on January 4. Thank you so much for all the donations to the Hilltown Food Pantry; there was a great response to this food drive.

2nd Thursdays - Movie Night - visit the library to learn of the upcoming movies - this year we move to a large screen!

November is a fun filled month

November at the Worthington Library is full of events. On Thursday, November 11, we will be showing the movie "Bottle Shock" at 7:00 pm. This is a fun movie about California wines breaking into the world scene and is based on a true story.

On Saturday the 13th, the library is hosting National Game Day from 10:00 to 4:00 pm. We're hoping to have the library filled with gamers of all kinds. We have many board and card games and some computers games, as well. If you have a favorite game, bring it to share. Our newest game is Wits & Wagers Family from the folks at North Star Games. This is the third annual National Game Day and there is a contest among libraries to see how many players we can get. Come in to play and boost our numbers. Snacks will be available and it's all free.

Last, but not least, on Saturday, November 20, the library is holding a Harvest Celebration to celebrate our recently awarded "On the Same Page" grant. This event will be held at the RH Conwell school cafeteria from 4:00 - 6:00 pm. Many local farmers and organizations will display information about their work. Demonstrations, samples and refreshments are part of the celebration as well as music performed by Sarah Stockwell. The library table will have copies of the book The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan which is the subject of the grant. This will be a fun and informative celebration that you won't want to miss!

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE STARTS NEW NIGHT FOR MOVIES

We're trying to make movie-viewing at the library easier for you to attend. Our regular monthly movie night will now be the second THURSDAY at 7:00pm. Most of our regularly scheduled programs fall on Thursday nights so this seemed like a natural. Here is our line-up of Thursday night activities:

1st Thursday - Genealogy Club - work on your own or town history using the expertise of others who have been researching for a long time.

4th Thursday - Book Club - each month we choose a book to read and discuss. It's fun and enlightening and we often have snacks.

Secret Life of Bees at the library

You just missed our discussion of the book by Sue Monk Kidd, The Secret Life of Bees. We had a great discussion about southern society in the 60's, racial prejudices and who held them and the significance of the Black Madonna. This is a great book. For those who have read it and for those who haven't, we will be showing the movie which was made from it next Thursday evening. Be here at 7:00 pm on Thursday September 30 for the Worthington Library's showing of The Secret Life of Bees. The cast includes Queen Latifah, Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Hudson and Alicia Keys.
Next month's book is Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book.

September at the Library

September brings us around once more to crisp nights and colorful leaves. New books are on the shelves and plans for great programs are in the works. Coming up on September 2 is the monthly Genealogy Club. If you are interested in Worthington History or your own family's roots, this is the place to be. We help each other with searches, giving ideas and advice on places to find the elusive relative or record. There is lots of great information on the internet and we can easily access it. Come by at 7:00pm on Thursday evening and join the fun.

On Saturday, September 11, the Second Saturday Movie will be a treat! We will show Blade Runner, the director's cut, which will begin at 6:00pm. Bring your own snacks and settle in for an evening's entertainment - free!

Keep the date open - September 16 at 7:00pm - the Library's Annual meeting this year will feature speakers about the changes at the R.H. Conwell School what it means for the town.

Book Club Readers can begin reading Sue Monk Kidd's Secret Life of Bees for September 23 at 7:00 pm. Not in the book club? Why not ?- we always have a great time. Books should be available by this Thursday.

Mad Science and Moving Movies

BIRDS OF PREY

Thursday, August 5 from 10:30 am to 11:30 am is everyone's favorite summer program - Birds of Prey. This Connie Dorrington memorial program presents Tom Ricardi and his birds. This is a wonderful and educational event for the whole family. Outside under the canopy, see the owls, eagles, hawks and vultures. Don't miss this summer reading program special presentation!

Summer Reading Presents Indian Culture

On Thursday, July 22, the Worthington Library will have a new feature on the lawn. Jennifer Lee will be setting up her wigwam and demonstrating Native American crafts and telling stories from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. All movies are free and begin at 6:00pm on the second Saturday of the month.

For history and genealogy buffs, we continue to hold our regular Genealogy Club on the first Thursday of each month at 7:00pm. On June 26, we are partnering with the Worthington Historical Society to present a program on the holdings of the Massachusetts Archives. This program will be held at the Historical Society Building from 2:30 - 4:30 pm. Come learn what fabulous resources are at hand from the Mass Archives.

Our Summer Reading Program, Go Green at Your Library, will begin on July 15 with Tales of the Earth by storyteller Diane Edgecomb. Summer Reading programs are on Thursdays from 10:30 to 11:30am. Many fine programs and old favorites are in the works for this summer - more to come.

The library Book Club is taking up the classics this summer, beginning with Virgil's Aeneid. Come join us for a discussion on June 24 at 7:00pm.

Thanks to the Friends of the Worthington Library, we once again have four passes to the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield. Each pass admits up to four people. Check for current exhibits, performances and special events at berkshiremuseum.org You can also sign up for e-news at that site. Currently there is an exhibit called "Armed & Dangerous: Art of the Arsenal." It will be on exhibit until June 6.

Another pass the library has is to Historic Deerfield. There are two passes which admit four people. The Deerfield passes have been made available by the Worthington Historical Society.

Two Grants Award Books to Library

The Worthington Library has been awarded two grants for books. One is from the Libri Foundation which provides books for children in rural libraries. The books range from board books and picture books to junior and young adult titles. This year, we received an additional set of math and science books. In total, the library received 78 books. The Friends of the Worthington Library donated the base amount for the matching grant. Some titles are Alice Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll, Night Wings by Joseph Bruchac, Mr. Lincoln's High-Tech War, by Thomas, B. Allen, Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson, Career Ideas for Kids Who Like Computers by Diane Lindsey Reeves, Nanotechnology by Rebecca L. Johnson, Computer Game Designer by Don Rauf. The books are on display and most are ready to be checked out. There is something for everyone so come by and see them!

The second grant from the American Library Association and the National Endowment for the Humanities is called "We the People Bookshelf on a More Perfect Union". The seventeen books in this grant are on themes that range from the Declaration of Independence to the Civil War. There are novels as well as history books for children and adults. As a bonus, we received a copy of Ken Burns' DVD, The Civil War. Look for programming around this grant in the future.

Margaret Dondiego to give energy healing talk

Thursday April 8 at 7:00 pm, local practitioner, Margaret Dondiego, will give a talk at the Worthington Library entitled: Self Healing Using Your Body's Energy System. This program is free and open to the public.

About Margaret Dondiego

Margaret is a graduate of the Institute of Healing Arts and Sciences (IHAS) four-year Energy Medicine Practitioner program, including a two year internship at Hilltown Community Health Center in Worthington, MA. She has been a teaching assistant at IHAS and a supervisor of Junior and Senior students in Energy Therapy internships and has taught in Energy Medicine trainings with Dorothy Martin-Neville.

Margaret is a certified Kripalu Yoga Instructor and Reiki II practitioner, has studied Jin Shin Jytsu and Pranic Breathwork with Andy Caponigro, and has a BA in religion from the University of Massachusetts. She takes a special interest in treatment and support for people with pain problems and is completing Level II certification with Anodea Judith and Sacred Centers, applying the chakra system and Energy Medicine to the treatment and healing of chronic pain.

The Worthington Library will host award-winning pastel artist Gregory John Maichack’s workshop: “Van Gogh’s Starry Night: How to Pastel Paint
Expressively” on Saturday, March 27, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. This pastel painting workshop is designed for beginners and experienced artists. Seats may fill quickly so please call 413-238-5565 to pre-register. All materials included.

Andras Arthen of Worthington, along with his family and other members of The EarthSpirit Community, recently returned from Australia where they joined thousands of other international participants attending the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Melbourne.

The Parliament is the oldest and largest interreligious conference in the world, having been held initially in Chicago in 1893. That particular event marked the first time that religious leaders and dignitaries from the mainstream Western faiths met formally with their counterparts from Asian religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism, giving rise in our culture to an interest in such practices as Yoga and Zen which continues to this day.

The Melbourne Parliament, from December 3-9, brought together some 6,500 delegates from most of the many spiritual traditions including Buddhists, Christians, Sikhs, Muslims, American Indians, Zoroastrians, Pagans, Jews, Yorubans, etc. The week-long event featured over 600 workshops, lectures, ceremonies, panel discussions, and artistic presentations which provided insight into the richness and diversity of the world’s religions and addressed the roles that those institutions can play in resolving some of the major problems that we face today.

Andras Arthen, who is a member of the Parliament’s Board of Trustees, will offer a talk about the event (including a slide presentation) at the Worthington Library on Wednesday, March 3 at 7:00 pm. DriveSharp at the Library

The Worthington Library has received a new brain fitness software called DriveSharp, a series of game-like computer exercises proven to sharpen driving skills, improve reaction time and cut car crash risk by up to 50%. This has been provided by AAA Pioneer Valley and PositScience and is available to up to 25 patrons. The program is available on one of the library's computers or a disc can be checked out and the program installed on a home computer. Internet access and audio is required. The recommended training schedule is 20 minutes long, 3 to 5 days per week. Patrons following the recommended schedule can expect to complete the program in 7 to 10 weeks. Come into the library for more information and improve your driving skills.

We had a great summer at the Worthington Library due to you - our patrons! This fall will have a great line-up of features to help you make the most of your library experience. New books are on their way and great online research data bases are being lined up that you can use at the library or from home. Our library Book Club is back on schedule, as well. Read Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and come to discuss the book and hear commentary, criticism and an interview with the author. Our first meeting will be September 24.

At 10:30 am, the Worthington Library will hold its annual Connie Dorrington program: Birds of Prey. Tom Ricardi will bring his beautiful birds and teach us all what amazing animals they are. Families are invited to enjoy this wonderful treat.

At 7:00 pm, another treat is in store. Teens and adults are invited to explore Astrology with Chris LaFond. Chris is an experienced Astrologer and Psychic Couselor who works, teaches and lectures regularly on Cape Cod and in the Boston area. He is a certified astrologer by the National Council for Geocosmic Research and has lectured on astrological topics at both local and international conventions. Astrology is one of the oldest esoteric systems of knowledge known to humanity and predates most currently-know methods of divination.

Both programs are part of the Starship Adventure and the Find What's Out There summer reading program. Starship Adventure at Your Library is funded by your local library, the Massachusetts Regional Library Systems and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

July 21 at 7 pm, the Worthington Library is honored to present award-winning author, Martha Ackmann, who will speak about her book, The Mercury 13: The True Story of Thirteen Women and the Dream of Space Flight. Dr Ackmann is a member of the Gender Studies Department at Mount Holyoke College who writes about women who have changed America. She is a frequent contributor to many of the nation's newspapers and is a commentator for National Public Radio. A much sought-after speaker, she uses the story of the Mercury 13 as an inspiring study of women's determination and hope. This program is free to the public and is a part of this summer's reading program, Starship Adventure at Your Library.

The program features the demise of the lost towns flooded to create the Quabbin, the construction of the massive reservoir and how the Quabbin works today. After a long month without internet access due to storm damage, the Worthington Library has finally reconnected - with DSL! Now you can use the library's computers or your own to get on the internet with lightning speed. Come in and try it out. You'll be amazed.

On another note, the library will be closed for repairs from January 20 through 24. We need to replace the beams that hold up the first floor and we need your help! KURDISH TALES AT THE LIBRARY

On Wednesday, September 24 at 7:00 pm., the Worthington Library will be presenting award-winning storyteller Diane Edgecomb. A Fire in My Heart; A Storyteller's Journey Among the Kurds is an entertaining and insightful performance which charts Diane's years collecting the vanishing folkloric tales of the Kurdish people. Her seven-year quest brought her to remote mountain villages in Turkey which are usually forbidden to outsiders. A master teller, Edgecomb will share legends from her new book, A Fire in My Heart: Kurdish Tales, never before published stories that reveal the folkloric riches of this ancient Middle Eastern culture along with anecdotes of her travels up sheer mountain roads to record the last Kurdish storytellers. The performance resonates with the humor and pathos of Kurdish village life and the colorful people that shared their lives with her. Join us for this memorable event.

"Each new Generation has the opportunity to carry on the ancient tradition of growing Native seeds and passing a living legacy on to the next generation. Through story and song this performance explores the connections between people, plants and Native gardens. These gentle, humorous, nurturing stories also lead us on a journey through the cycles of the seasons and the changes that take place around us, and within us."

Michael is the creator and coauthor of many award-winning books such as Keepers of the Earth, Keepers of the Animals, Keepers of Life, Keepers of the Night and Native American Gardening. His most recent books are Everyday Herbs in Spiritual Life: A Guide to Many Practices and Abraham's Bind & Other Bible Tales of Trickery, Folly, Mercy and Love. He has written many magazine articles and his feature articles have appeared in many newspapers and his op-ed pieces have been carried over Reuters International News Service.

Congratulations to the winners of Worthington Library's Poetry Slam! First place went to Kate Ewald, second to Vati Srieberg, third to Mary Wheelan and fourth to Darrell Moore! A fantastic collection of poetry was heard and a fun evening was had by all. We'll all be rooting for Kate as she goes on to the Regional Slam to be held at the Eric Carle Museum in Amherst on May 25 between 3 and 5 pm.

Building a Strong Financial Foundation

On Thursday, January 10 at 7:00 pm, Alex Lak will present “Building a Strong Financial Foundation”. This program introduces basic investment concepts and discusses the importance of having an investment strategy. Buying and selling quality investments, the value of time in the financial market and the concept of risk tolerance in investing will be covered in this enlightening one hour talk. A two-volume set, this is the abridged version of the twenty volume OED, a dictionary on historical principles. This is a wonderful tool for writers, researchers and word-lovers. This month we are featuring books by late authors Madeline L'Engle and Robert Jordan. Young adults have long enjoyed L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time and its sequels. Jordan is famous for his Wheel of Time series which he was finishing when he died. Delve into time with either series here at the library.
